Jones Sewing Machine Serial Number Lookup

William Jones started making sewing machines in 1859, and in 1860 formed a partnership with Thomas Chadwick. Trading as Chadwick & Jones they manufactured sewing machines at Ashton-under-Lyne. This partnership was short lived and was dissolved in March 1863. Thomas Chadwick later joined Bradbury & Co.
In 1869 William Jones opened a factory in Guide Bridge Nr Manchester and the firm became incorporated as the Jones Sewing Machine Co. Ltd on 5th July 1869. The company survives today as Brother UK Ltd.
The Jones company produced a variety of machines for both Domestic and Industrial use. Click on the links to the right to see examples of some of this company's machines.

Jones originally in or around 1880 started with a simply numeric list of serial numbers for all their machines. Whilst they continued this one numeric list it is possible to approximately date a machine. Jones in their wisdom started several different numeric and alpha-numeric serial number runs after 1935. Jones D63 Consort VS Machines Serial Number 3F117375 (number under front slide plate). 'Sews forwards and reverse, hems, gathers, inserts zips, quilts, stylish two tone finish, light weight base, smart carry case, hand or electric models available, takes attachments, simple to use, TV suppressed, guaranteed'. (Note the flimsy bobbin winder). Apr 12, 2017 Brother sewing machine serial numbers are coded to indicate the manufacture date of the machine. The letter and first number indicate the month and last digit of the year the machine was made. Because the first number in the serial number could correspond to a year in any decade, you need help from Brother International Corp., the machine's.
